Article update: Evo adds $5000 to Burton Poachers prize

Brief: Online Ski and Snowboarding Retailer www.evogear.com is adding $5,000 to the total prize money for Burton’s "Poach for Freedom" Snowboarding Video Contest.

In a surprise move, Seattle-based ski and snowboard retailer evo (www.evogear.com) announced that they will add $5,000 cash to the total purse Burton is giving away in their "Poach for Freedom" contest. Burton's controversial challenge referred to as "Sabotage Stupidity" offers $5,000 to the person or crew that submits the best video documentation of their poach experience from each of the last four remaining "fascist" resorts that do not allow snowboarding. Videos entries can be submitted and watched on Burton's website at http://www.burton.com/poachers/. evo's additional $5,000 increases each award by $1,250.

As a retailer that represents both skiers and snowboarders, evo feels the time is long overdue for archaic discriminatory practices to fall by the wayside. Owner, Bryce Phillips explains, “Burton is a leader. We see their move to challenge the resort community as a catalyst for long overdue change. Our company was founded on the concept of inclusiveness and we want to wholly support Burton’s move by adding $5,000 of prize money.”

evo regularly brings skiers and snowboarders together for events like movie premiers and other industry parties at its 6,000 sq. ft. retail location. To further promote synergy among skiers and boarders, the company sponsors a “switch day” when all employees go to the mountain together, trade ski and snowboard equipment, and ride together.

From the very start evo has given equal representation to skiers and snowboarders. Many evo customers participate in both sports and evo feels that it’s time for resorts to recognize that reality. What better way to do so than by augmenting Burton’s "Poach for Freedom" challenge. Phillips elaborates, “If you add our contribution to Burton's generous prize, it should almost be enough to buy a season’s pass at Deer Valley after they open their doors to snowboarders.”

Most Amazing Stunts Ever - Ninja moves, flips, kicks, and tricks

WHat the !!!! Check out Joe Eigo. He's made the most money of anyone this year on the video site metacafe, as of today its $27,000+ dollars for this video. This is one of the best things I have ever seen, its absolutely incredible what he could do on a snowboard if he ever decided to strap in. He's like Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee. The most insane ninja moves, flips, kicks, and tricks. What does he eat for breakfast??

In the countdown for Metacafe's top yearly earners, Joe came out on top with a video full of martial arts inspired stuntwork, improvised in the streets, foam pits, and gyms. Hopefully the next year will be full of offers from Hollywood for more stunts, flips, spins, and tricks from Joe Eigo, pro stuntman.

The next candidate to take Joe's place might be Tyson Cecka. He does some crazy stunts and I think Joe Eigo would kick his a$$, but imagine a fight between these two.

DC Mountain Lab 1.5

Music from DC Mountain Lab 1.5

DC has put out a new movie about their mountain lab in Utah. WOW can you say lucky - Ken Block owns this private park, not to mention is a world record rallycar racer. The park is a dream for every snowboarder out there, so start saving your money or create a brand as well known as DC and you'll be shredding the gnar as soon as you can afford to buy your own mountain. I've seen some home rail set-ups that are pretty sick and I'd be curious to see what other snowboarders had home riding sections in the backyard. I know the Leines brothers have a sick set-up in Minnesota. Well dream on or go out there and build yourself something sweet to jib, cause chances are that you'll never visit this DC Mountain Lab place!

Ken Block Jumps his Subaru 171ft

Just about everyone has seen the recent cover of Snowboarder with Ken Block jumping his Subaru in New Zealand alongside snowboarders from the DC team. Apparently Ken is a F###in badass, because aside from creating DC Shoes, he has bigger balls than just about anyone out there. He pulls an Evel Kneivel-like air of 171 ft in his car for stunt junkies in this clip. The snow footy can be seen in DC Mountain Lab 1.5. read this story for more info

Snowboarders declare victory on Taos

Shayboarder posted up this info on her blog: Now Taos Has Allowed snowboarding on their mountain.
It looks like Burton Snowboards can claim success on this one. Only recently began an ad campaign led by Burton to get all 4 blacklist resorts to Open Up. see $5000 prize for Poaching the Mountain" So suddenly Taos has declared that they will now open to snowboarders. The snowboarders and Jake Burton both get a victory. It looks like Burton really made a difference. They post a poaching Taos video where the snowboarders get roughed up simply for snowsliding down a mountain on one board instead of two. And it leads to Taos opening the mountin to snowboarders, yeah!
So Burton's marketing team can pat themselves on the back, cause this announcement will only cause great sales at Christmastime, and who in the snowboarding industry isn't looking for that. There's still 3 more resorts out there who don't allow snowboarding. So poach away and maybe you'll even win the $5000 prize Burton is offering for filming your exploits and publishing them on their site.

New Frequency out Now

Issue 6.2
The Fall 2007 issue is hitting shelves just in time for the snow to start flying. Features include an interview with Austrian powder pirate Gigi Rüf, a four day powder and champagne binge on a private heli-equipped yacht, the rich history of Lake Tahoe’s Boreal Mountain Resort, summer camp in Iceland where the sun hardly sets, a gallery of images from Spacecraft’s Stefan Hofmann, and an urban mission to the Canadian Province of Québec. Commentary on Let it Ride: The Craig Kelly Story, Whistler artist Vanessa Stark, the art of grabbing stalefish, Whistler’s new gondola, and, finally, the number one commodity being plundered by aliens here on planet earth—the scarce and highly flexible element known as Boron—rounds out the issue. Getting you ready for another year of riding, it’s frequency: TSJ’s eighteenth installment.

Gigi Rüf
The Black Book Diaries: Gigi Rüf Interview: Senior Editor John Laing speaks with globetrotting Austrian Gigi Rüf about growing up in the Austrian Alps, the effects of global warming, snowboard travel, and the importance of making friends along the way. Gigi Rüf Rüf is on his own program.

Blades of Glory
The Seven Circles of Extravagance: Luxury Travel: Senior Writer Dan Kostrzewski can’t believe his luck when he is given a pass aboard a 201 foot luxury yacht, the Absinthe, for a four day heli-boarding odyssey in British Columbia’s Desolation Sound. Beer can chicken on a glacier, heli-fishing, and a bottomless glass of Dom accompany pow turns captured on film by Eric Berger. This trip might just have spoiled him for good.

$5000 cash prize for Snowboarding Where You Can't snowboard

Thanks to Justin for the heads up on this one.
Burton snowboards is offering a $5000 cash prize for making a video documentary showing you accomplish a poaching mission at the 4 resorts in North America that don't allow snowboarding: Deer Valley,UT; Alta,UT; Mad River Glen,VT; & Taos,NM. The video footy they already posted is hilarious, although it looks like some riders might have got arrested in Taos. I bet if this happens to you, Jake Burton himself will pay your ticket, so don't worry, just poach. F$$# those skiers, they give cool skiers a bad name. I have some friends that ski and aren't biotches like these guys in Utah,New Mexico, and Vermont.
If anyone is down, we should organize a million snowboarder march on these mountains and protest these Draconian laws!

Funner Webisode #9 - Urban Jibbing in Bellingham

Jibbing downtown Bellingham,WA after a big snowstorm with Lucas Debari, Caleb Johnson, Kyle Walton, Nick Ennen, and Chase Cleveland. Some crazy unique obstacles and good riding. Check out our new movie Sentimental Values on DVD Now!

Isenseven - Crashes and Outtakes

The Isenseven crew is based in Europe although they tend to do most of their snowboarding in Canada and the USA. These videos are some of my personal favorites because of the funny moments and great filming. They are never taking themselves too seriously, yet they manage to pull off some of the most creative riding of any crew out there today.
Their new movie is called Ubermovie, and while I have yet to see it, I know its going to be a good one based on the teasers they've put out throughout the internet and their last vid, Prediculous.

Let it Ride - The Craig Kelly Story

Let it Ride is the Craig Kelly story. A documentary about the greatest snowboarder in the beginning of snowboarding history, although I tend to think Terje Haakonsen is truly the best rider ever. Craig did it all, from Freestyle contests with flouro outfits, to big mountain in Alaska. Sadly Craig died in an avalanche while guiding at a cat-skiing resort in British Columbia. this movie is a definate must to have in any snowboard fan's collection as a vid you an bust out for the non-snowboarder to help them get a better grasp on why you do it.
Sit back and watch a legend in action.

Return of the Nina : A Right On Brother Film

Return of the Nina is a film by Right On Brother. It loosely follows the story of the 3 Giffin brothers, Zack, Jeff, and Sam as they live life constantly seeking adventure mostly by visiting the ski resort at Mt Baker. The film is truly different than most other snow flicks that come out these days and its very refreshing to see something different in a world of cloned movies. The are all great in their own endeavors, Zack being a skier, Jeff a telemarker, and Sam a snowboarder.

This is also the story of La Nina, a seasonal heavy snowfall that only comes around every once in a while, and Mt Baker footage from the years 1998-99 (World Record Season at Mt Baker) until 2006-07. The movie tells a story of the ups (classic shots of huge backflip by Sam and 360 by Tarek Husevold, the deepest pow shots, rides down the Mt Baker Arm and Hemispheres, Record Snowfall Levels) to the downs (Avalanches with footy of Mt Baker's Historic Avalanche on the Arm that sadly resulted in the deaths of 2 people - the first time this footage has been unveiled) to the happy moments (Flips off rocks, shirtless: skiing and snowboarding with no snow, funny personalities telling us why they love to ride, hanging with friends).

Return of the Nina is heartwarming, shocking, fun to watch, and definately will provide you with some fire to fuel your ride for another season in the mountains doing what you love. Its a refreshing look into your own reasons for why YOU ride, and lets face it sometimes we can forget how fun it is to ride and that we should do it for ourselves and its time to enjoy while we've got it.

Length: 52min

New Wall Ride Jam @ Walbon's

Saturday the 13th of October was a wall ride jibfest with a solid drop in ramp and some bangers going down. Andy Walbon's crew decided to throw a party for his roomate Randy's b-day. Well local boardshop The EDGE listened and put together 2 kegs and some shwag to give out. Plus they organized some free pizza and got quite a few loads of snow in for it.

When all was said and done Tarek Husevold took home the win with some fancy footwork. Looks like its the start of a solid year for the Bellingham Urban Shredders League.

As the party was getting shut down by the cops photographer Aaron Pffefer climbed on the roof and ordered everyone to get into a photo with the cops. Keg cops and everything, flashes going off and the last few riders dropping in.

The next day we watched the seahawks game at Lando's where he's got a sweet Jamie Lynn wall painting.

A Night in Bellingham

This past Friday was a very nice day. It was how all Friday's should be: stress-free, buoyant, and slightly giddy. Normally, Friday's are not like this - they more resemble a Tuesday. But Friday was indeed a Friday, and a special Friday because it was the night of the Standard and Funner films duel-premier. My friend Kael and I rallied on up to the majestic Mt. Baker Theatre, in Bellingham. Bellingham is a very special place. The locals there are like one big family, and they readily welcome "outsiders" with a pat on the back and a round of shotgunnin'. The "family" was in full attendance, and if you weren't, what the hell were you thinkin? Now to the matter of utmost importance...

Mr. Dubs, very goddamn well done. Funner's "Sentimental Values" kept my head shaking in disbelief for a good hour. The Funner crew has really stepped it up with stellar filming and inspired riding. Hoots and hollers overpowered the soundtrack through the length of the film. If other films from this season seem to lack powder, it is because Funner stole it all. "Sentimental Values" showcases true northwest riding: a compromise between chaos and beauty. I particularly enjoyed the South American montage. "Sentimental Values" ends with a knock 0ut punch from the Bellingham bruiser, Lucas Debari. But viewer beware: after seeing "Sentimental Values" the remaining days of summer will be even more painful than ever. As soon as it ended, I checked the date on my phone: "damn, it's still August".

As for Standard Films' "Catch the Vapors", well, Mark Landvik is in it. I don't really need to say anything else.

Eric Jackson is also in it, and damn, homeboy loves to roll the dice. He hustled my buddy outside the theatre. Well played, Mr. Jackson, well played.

I don't remember much after that. Ahhh, Bellingham.

Pocket Change

"'Pocket Change' is a film by Mack Collins that labels it’s self somewhere between super radical-gnar-manbeast and emotionally enthralling...This film isn’t going to be your typical run of the mill, eye candy put to electro-pop music snowboard video." (via Snowboard-mag.com)

Don't know too much about this cat from down at Evergreen State College, but it looks as if he aims to make the "Rambo" of shred flicks. Maybe Rambo isn't the best comparison, but now I get to share the trailer for the new Rambo...mission accomplished.

Chile Snowboarding

Hey everyone! This is Dubs. Me, Lucas Debari, and Tarek Husevold are in Chile right now filming and its sick. We've ran into all the Chilean pro homies like Manuel Diaz, JP Audisio, Christian Wehrhahn and more. We had a sneak preview premier for Sentimental Values at El Colorado Happy Hour for those guys and its was a hit. Needless to say we are going to be doing a lot more gnarly shizzle while we're down here. The snow base is great and we've been making some pure powder tracks for all of you stuck in summer. I will add a picture or two soon, its been crazieness so far. Oh yeah, its supposed to snow .5 meters tonight (1.5ft)!!!!!!!!!! Expect to see some sick stuff from the Funner Crew!!!!

Yo internet! It is August, if you know what I mean...

-Signal Snowboards is jointly (hehe) hosting the First Annual Railtown Streetjam. I don't exactly know what this means; I think it is sneaky Canadian code. Cute girls that can rip on a snowboard! The Roxy team travels to Japan and travels around a bit.

Company: Right on Brother productions
Produced by Studio 411
Directed by Sam Giffin

Mikey P and Patrick McCarthy watching the seahawks lose.

Downtown Throwdown yo!

To whom it may concern,

I apologize for the lack of updates. A trip to Chile, a new school year, new house, and unexcusable laziness have prevented me from updating. This will cease now...

Today, Saturday October 6th, is the third annual Downtown Throwdown hosted by Krush's Snowboy Productions and Boarderline*. Festivities will include a bbq (hell yes), rail jam, product giveaways (from more sponsors than shaun white has), and a bro fest. Setup includes a whoopty-doo, shit is gonna be crackin! This is going to be a good time.

7pm.
1100 Bellevue Way NE,
Bellevue, the eastside sonnnnnn

Rumor has it that local celeb, Craig "showtime" Gillis will be there.
*seriously boarderline, is this the best image you have??

Words on Wednesday

Chile next week...but for now, some findings on the world wide web.

1. If you are in the northern hemisphere, then grab your fanciest hat and head to Bellingham on Friday for the premier of Standard Films' "Catch the Vapors" (...bro...) which will be preceded by none other than,
funner's "SENTIMENTAL VALUES"

This is it folks, go catch some shred flicks and then go get down and make it rain...

2. After the funnerpalooza on Friday, check out how Burton has made HP.... Hip!!! (by the way, is Burton cool?? Or are they too main stream?)

3. If you are still in the northern hemisphere, or any of the other hemispheres, go to Bumbershoot. Why? There are many reasons. For instance, you can work on being a hipster and tell all your friends about the bands that you saw that they have never heard of. But most importantly:

Wu-Tang Clan

Pocket Change

"'Pocket Change' is a film by Mack Collins that labels it’s self somewhere between super radical-gnar-manbeast and emotionally enthralling...This film isn’t going to be your typical run of the mill, eye candy put to electro-pop music snowboard video." (via Snowboard-mag.com)

>>teaser<<

Don't know too much about this cat from down at Evergreen State College, but it looks as if he aims to make the "Rambo" of shred flicks. Maybe Rambo isn't the best comparison, but now I get to share the trailer for the new Rambo...mission accomplished.

Hell yes.

New News

Yo internet! It is August, if you know what I mean...

-Signal Snowboards is jointly (hehe) hosting the First Annual Railtown Streetjam. I don't exactly know what this means; I think it is sneaky Canadian code. I believe they switched town and jam, so if I am right (and I am brilliant), there is REALLY a railjam in streettown. Next, find out where streettown is...

-Burton put up its new site...

-So did brand o' the year, BATALEON...

-there is HIDDEN TREASURE in Picture This (via Onboard)

-Thanks Brain! is a hit, buy it NOW...

I just returned from a little vacation in Tucson, Arizona. I did all kinds of Arizoney things. I ate mexican food, and went to Mexico to buy some fresh new threads. I also caught a tarantula, which my dad thought was a mammal. I googled it and showed him that it wasn't....
