MTN Ops Tailgate Alaska 2009 Backcountry Freeride Snowboard Trip

MTNOPS is proud to announce it's premier Tailgate event, Tailgate Alaska 2009. Held in Valdez,
Alaska, this one-of-a-kind nonevent offers participants the opportunity to truly experience Alaskan
backcountry riding.

Managed by legendary Alaska rider Nick Perata, Tailgate Alaska 2009 will host pro riders, backcountry
experts, industry insiders, and Valdez locals. Attendees will have the opportunity to ride with some of the
most experienced backcountry riders in Alaska.

Tailgate Alaska 2009 is an all-inclusive experience. Transportation, lodging, meals, and backcountry
training will all be taken care of by MTNOPS staff. Lodging for Tailgate Alaska 2009 will be at the
Mountain Sky Hotel in downtown Valdez.

According to Nick:

As host of Tailgate Alaska '09' I would like to welcome you to some of the best snowboarding on the
planet. Come ride with me and the top pros of today in a place where legends are made. You will
ride every kind of terrain there is, chutes, bowls, tight couloirs, natural halfpipes and open pow fields.
But on such a grand scale that with each run comes an even greater felling of accomplishment, awe,
and achievement. The unknown truth about Alaska is that 60% of the terrain is intermediate and
you don't have to be a backcountry expert to enjoy these mountains. Even the beginner will have
the time of their life. This is the place to come to improve your big mountain skills and experience
the best riding of your life with your best bros, snowboard heros, and all the local legends.

You have always wanted to ride Alaska, so come ride it with me and my bros.

There are two sessions available and open to the public for Tailgate Alaska 2009.

Session One will be from March 27-April 4 and includes, up to five days of flying (6 -8 runs per day).
Deluxe accommodations (wifi and indoor pool), transportation to and from the pass and other
recreational activities
and three meals are provided. Lodging is 2 per room, 4 per car.
Session Two will be from April 5 – 12 and is the bare bones package. – just fine accommodations
(wifi and indoor pool), transportation and three meals a day. Bring a splitboard, and some gas
money for the sleds and you will get there. We will also run some snowmobile shuttles to more
low angle areas to build kickers and experiment with natural terrain. Heli riding will be available at
 an additional cost.

Each session is limited, so reserve your spot now!

Funny Snowboard Commercial

A funny snowboard commercial entitled "Snowboard.mpeg" where a lady gets sprayed in the face by powder. Where do these advertisers come up with these ads?

Mervin Manufacturing | Park Pickle 2010 Technology | What is the GNU Park pickle?

Newport Beach, CA - At the North American sales meeting for Gnu Snowboards, plans for the GNU Park Pickle were unveiled. The Patent Pending Proprietary Park Pickle Product will be included in the 09/10 Gnu Snowboard line. Based on the idea that heelside turns require more leverage than toeside turns, the Park Pick will have a deeper sidecut on the heelside. The board is a true twin shape with a centered stance so it can be ridden with either goofy or regular and includes Mervin Mfg’s exclusive use of Banana Technology.

Pete Saari, VP of Marketing at Mervin had this to say. “The Park Pickle achieves perfect balance through asymmetry, a deeper sidecut and asymmetric core on the heel edge balances your foots asymmetry and the different turn mechanics between heel and toe turns. Twin Asymmetric Banana Magnetraction design is the future of all terrain freestyle performance snowboards. Pickle Power!”

A limited run of 300 Park Pickles for North America will be built and released for sale to select Authorized Gnu Dealers in mid December.

Kanye West | New Album | 808s and Heartbreak | Download Here

Although this doesn't have much to do with snowboarding, I thought I'd let everyone know that the new Kanye West Album just dropped. He makes some good music. Some people hate him and others love him. That's what makes a genuine standout artist, anyone who can generate controversy and entertainment. Kanye West's new album is called 808s & Heartbreak. Let just say this is some great new music for your ipod, and you'll be inspired to try something new on your snowboard with some funky new tunes. At this point, this is some of the freshest new stuff out. I got my copy and I'm loving it.

If you love Kanye, tell me why. If you hate him and think his music sucks, lets hear it.....

Powder and RAILS Episode 4: Snowboarders in Exile continued

Snowboarders in Exile was the hit. FLF had made a small stir with The Western Front, but Exile actually created a movement. It solidified the video-pro as a legit career path, and made FLF the first legitimate snowboard filmmakers. In the years following, Jerry Dugan and Arthur Krehbiel helped both Standard Films and Mack Dawg Productions get off the ground and on their way to becoming two of the biggest snowboarding production companies going today. The main riders in the video, Damian Sanders, Steve Graham, Dave Seoane, and Chris Roach, became household names everywhere and not just in California.

Since Western Front had given FLF some industry credibility, the video actually had sponsors and they were able to leave their home mountain and go to places they had never been. All the riding is done as a group and it's easy to see them feeding off each other in every session and trying to outstyle one another. The music got a little better too, with tunes by HR, fIREHOSE, and Husker Du. There's even a glimpse of a certain Penthouse Pet in there. This video is a lot of fun.

TREVAR CUSHING

POWDER and RAILS Episode 2: Western Front

Watching FLF's "Western Front" nowadays, you may think this is some fruity shit. But if you've ever seen any other snowboarding videos from around the same time you understand that "Western Front" is the coolest thing going. It's the first snowboarding video ever made that wasn't like a promo or a team video. Freestyle riding was the main focus and it was more about doing tricks rather than winning races or trying to replicate the stuff that skiers did. Snowboarding was really small then and not many people even got to see the video, but it set the stage for what snowboarding was going to turn into.

TREVAR CUSHING

POWDER & RAILS Video 1

POWDER & RAILS
In the late 80s, a bunch of skaters who were bored in the wintertime inadvertently made snowboarding what it is today. They filmed each other not with any sort of historic legacy in mind, but just because that’s what you do when you’re a bunch of dudes who ride around on a piece of fiberglass in the snow all day. Then people saw these videos and started to realize the potential for tricks and big air on a snowboard, and everything else took off from there.

For whatever reason, most snowboarders have never embraced their forerunners with the same enthusiasm as skaters and surfers. That’s why I decided to make this show—as a way of giving credit to the people who took snowboarding from a fringe hobby to something people get paid stupid amounts of money to do. Or at least that’ll be the first few episodes. We’ll see where it goes from there.

Love,
Trevar.

5 Music Albums to Listen to While Snowboarding

Everyone needs to find good music to snowboard to. Pack your Zune or Ipod full of tracks from these albums for an all day shred journey. We chose 5 great albums to choose from for an amazing time on the hill.

5 Snowboarding Music Choices from www.snowboardsoundtracks.com:

1. Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
This Cd keeps you going while riding. Its en-fused with energy that doesn't exist in most of today's newer music.

2. Trevor Andrew - Trouble Andrew
While Trevor Andrew's name might not instantly be recognizable by non-snowboarders, his music is about to change that. This longtime pro snowboarder turned musician started writing music during the downtime after a snowboard injury. Encouraged by his girlfriend Santi White of the Band Santogold, Trevor started playing his songs for others and recorded this amazing album.

3. Stephen Marley - Mind Control
Stephen Marley follows the roots of Reggae legend and father Bob Marley with modern dancehall beats. Sometimes I just put this album on repeat and listen to it over and over. The good vibes and thumping bass keep the shred-party rolling.

4. Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
Chromeo hails from Montreal, Canada where they make music to keep from freezing during their extremely long winter. Their sound can be compared to 80s synthesizer funk with a new school music studio. This duo sounds like no other, you'll be inspired to do your tricks with a new found flair.

5. The All Nighters - Drink the Night
The All Nighters are from a new surf rock style influence. You'll be floating through some deep powder snow and feel like you're surfing the waves on the beach in California.

7. Grand Finale (22:01) - The majority of the Absinthe Films crew is showing presence in Haines during the last weeks of the season. The race for the last opportunities to get shots is on. Annie Boulanger is stepping it up, Sylvain Bourbousson safes his part and Marc Frank Montoya is getting schooled by Austrian Wolfgang Nyvelt. A long eventful season is going to it’s end!
8. Optimistic? (49:13 - Free with complete season) - Absinthe forges another unforgettable snowboard film with it's newest release, Optimistic?. In the first winter to show the undeniable effects of global warming, Absinthe Films explored the effects of a changing planet. For those who live to snowboard, these changes can be perceived as impossible challenges or creative opportunities. Absinthe reconfirms it's ability to find the best conditions when the rest have given up or resigned themselves to the park. Following eighteen individuals through their interpretation of this past winter, Optimistic? features the worlds best riders, pushing the boundries of snowboarding under a constantly changing planet. Skate Banana Magne Traction Technology Demonstrated by Blair Habenicht

Blair Habenicht is from Bellevue, WA but can be seen skating, surfing, and snowboarding around in places like Bellingham, WA, Mt Baker, Chris Corraline's Surf Farm on the coast, Alpental, Alaska, and Barcelona. He's been tearing up the slopes for some time now and is finally getting recognized by big companies like Think Thank, Absinthe Films, Lib Tech Skate Banana Company, Volcom, and Dragon. He's the cousin of Scott Stamnes, that guy who always skated the mini-ramps on fishing ships in Alaska in the old Volcom Videos like Chicagof - Special Edition. Blair is getting tons of hits on his youtube snowboard video "Blair Habenicht Skate Banana Footage Lib Tech Snowboard," right now there's 234,000 views. Is it Blair Demonstrating his skate banana tech moves and tricks, or the novelty of the skate banana's reverse camber technology driving all these viewers to check him out? You be the judge, I think Blair is a great rider with pure big mountain style and a little jibbing mixed in. Look for Blair rolling his halfie cigs up in a parking lot near you. If you're lucky enough to take a run with him down the rascal at Mt Baker, don't expect to keep up. He's been shredding with Temple Cummins since he was a little grom.
Official Video description: Blair jibs on a Banana and then with the same park jib stance and set up rides pow normal and switch without having to get way back on the back leg. Easy relaxed balanced stance in pow switch or regular and then straight to the jibs. One board does it all from one stance, twin banana freestyle is wide open from the streets, park pipe to the pow. The future is bananas!

Standard Films 2008 - Aesthetica Video

Standard Films' Aesthetica Teaser Music
Song: "Disposable Heroes"
Artist: Metallica
Album: Master of Puppets
Wow, this is the best teaser so far. Mark Landvik starts it off with a BANGER ollie!!!! Unf*cKing believeable pop! Then later there is the biggest method gap ever seen, I don't even know who does it, but its huge. Look to see the best mixture ever for Standard Snowboard movies, with backcountry pillows, rails, park, and jumps from a very solid crew. 3 things you might notice:
#1 - No more Big Mountain Jeremy Jones.
I assume Jeremy was riding with TGR more this year. His heliboarding Alaska slaughterfests have left a big mark on the Standard videos, but they must be looking to get more freestyle this year and cut out the lines.
#2 - No way, where is John Jackson?
In a split from riding with his brother Eric Jackson, John Jackson didn't film with Standard this year. He's in the new Forum video "Forum or Against 'em."
#3 - Johan Olofsson Returns As a Noboarder!
I know all the old schoolers claim Johan's old TB footy is way better than most of the pros today, but is Johan ready to return to video glory? We'll have to wait and see how his noboarding turns out. Noboarding is like a combination of surfing and snowboarding. Like the original snurfer snowboards they have a strap/harness that you hold onto if you want control of the board.

Movie Description:
Aesthetica is a visual journey that captures the essence and elements of snowboarding. This feature snowboard film highlights the riding of progressive and unique freestyle features in the backcountry to the steepest and deepest powder conditions of 2008. Witness the pure power powder throwdowns by Mark Landvik, Eric Jackson and Mads Jonsson in the Great White North. Visit with the hardcore underground Canadian locals as they destroy the streets of Montreal.

Watch the most shocking avalanche footage of Xavier Delerue taking the ride of his life along with Torstein Horgmo's, mind blowing freestyle segment. Mathieu Crepel, Kazuhiro Kokubo and Mitch Reed deliver their best images to date along with the return of Johan Olofsson NoBoarding bottomless powder. This snowboard movie delivers all aspects of modern riding by today's best riders in 16mm film by Standard Films.

Episode List
1. Global Warming (22:02) - Absinthe films crew breaks it all down. Where they’re from to where they’re going. See a side of the crew few have ever seen. With European Alps not having any snow the crew is confronted with seeking new stomping grounds and has to venture out to new unknown Absinthe territory.
2. It's On! (22:03) - After the usual struggles at the beginning of the winter the crews are all in place and are bringing home the first quality footage. The urban riders hit up Denver after a Blizzard brought massive snow downtown, while the rest of the crew explores the interior of BC – Canada and finds the powder that apparently is lacking everywhere else in the world.
3. Canada to New York City (22:03) - Austrian Gigi Rüf has arrived and makes magic happen in Canada, while the urban crew is attacking the east coast. Mikey Le Blanc brings out a new vehicle the toboggan sled, apparently an old LeBlanc tradition. Be part of one of the funniest moments in Snowboarding!

5. Surprises and Bangers (22:02) - Russia is holding lots of surprises for the Absinthe crew and the early trip to Juneau on the other side of the hemisphere is paying off big time. The footage that will stand out and make the movie strong are finally coming together! Danny Davis is schooling established Romain de Marchi.
6. Alaska Striking Back (22:01) - Alaska is in full effect. The good conditions guarantee good footage but AK can also show it’s other face. A dangerous hoar frost layer can turn any slope into a night mare for any rider and as well as nagging friends that are trying to wake you up after an alaskan night out.
June 2008 Snowboarding South America with Funner Films

Farellones, Chile June 2008
Thanks for backing our stuff and watching our videos! Right now the season is off to a good start down south of the equator. A few early snow storms have swept in and the sun has came out for some Chilean sunsets. So while it might be summer where you're at, just remember that the shred rips on somewhere on the globe.

We also just finished a new 2 minute video from the June 2008, the first month of summer snowboarding in wintery Chile. EXPN picked it up, so check it out now.
