Tandom snowboarding, an invention that sucks

Stupid snowboard inventions, the two and three man snowboard. Check out these guys who are apparently "married to each other" through their newfound love affair with a snowboard. "People are open-minded" about it. They call it tandom snowboarding. Personally I'll keep my stick handled solo. It looks like something the Jackass guys might have invented, simply strap two sets of bindings to the modified extra long board. I'm wondering how they skate when the terrain gets flat?

Holy Oly Revival Quarterpipe Contest 08 Photos at Snoqualmie

The Terrain Park setup for the Holy Oly 2008, look at that gigantic quarterpipe.

Summit at Snoqualmie hosted the 5th annual Holy Oly Quarterpipe contest once again this year. The Holy Oly is a snowboard contest founded by Krush Kulesza, the snowboard marketing director of Summit-at-Snoqualmie, after he had a discussion with Mike Ranquet over some "barley pop" one night. They were talking about whether it would be cool if Krush repainted the old Olympia Can water tower over at Hyak, the Summit-at-Snoqualmie's secret weekend-only powder stash. (Hyak is now called Summit East, but no one cool calls it Summit East.) Ranquet told Krush it would be great if the tower got repainted and so an idea was born. The finished tower was gleaming in its glory again, this time with an updated yet retro Summit logo painted in homeage to the previous Olympia logo. Krush knew he needed to create a contest to celebrate, a party style quarterpipe jam with unique award names, cases of Olympia beer as prizes and Cobra Dogs hot dogs served up with Lib Tech's banana sauce for a condiment.

Some hikers and riders getting ready to drop in under the repainted Summit can.

So the Holy Oly was born, and the event's history has proven that you never know what to expect from powder storms, to lack of snow, to fog and greyday to perfect bluebird sunny day skies. In the winter of 2004-05, the lack of snow forced the Summit to spray over 1 million gallons of man-made snow to create a halfpipe, quarterpipe, and street course. No other mountain in Washington was open at the time. Last year the contest happened to be on one of the deepest powder days of the season, and it probably snowed a foot or two from the beginning of the day until the end of the event. In an example of classic Northwest weather conditions, contest competitors were taking fresh powder runs in between drop-ins to the quarterpipe.

Tim Carlson grabs method

With all the history behind the event, this year drew riders from all over the globe, including Danny Kass, Willie Yli-Luoma, past superhero Jeff Brushie, and young gun Manuel Diaz, who came all the way from Chile. It was a who's who of Northwest snowboarding from Mike Ranquet, Kurt Jensen, Monty Hays, John Laing, Pete Saari, The Phillips brothers, Justin Heath, Austin Sweetin, Austin Hironaka, Dave Goto, Lorn Davies, and many more.

The jibbers like Sean Genovese, Pat Milberry, and Gus Engle even came out for the all-new street course with wall ride gaps and jib-bonks conveniently located next to the 20ft tall quarterpipe. Jesse Burtner announced the event and said some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard at a snowboard contest. He definately kept the crowd entertained with his reactions to tricks.

Holy Oly Revival Quarterpipe Contest 08 at Hyak

The Holy Oly Revival turns 5…everyone is going bananas!

The Summit at Snoqualmie, Lib Technologies and Snowboy Productions are quite pleased to once again bring you what Snowboarder Magazine’s Pat “the eYe” Bridges called “the epitome of what snowboarding events should be”…The Holy Oly Revival on February 23 at Summit East.

Beneath the shadow of a 40’ beer can that started it all resides all the fixings…one giant hand-shaped quarterpipe next to a sweet jib line that’s next to a Cobra Dog stand that’s next to a crowd of snowboarding pros, groms, legends, up-and-comers, creepy lurkers, skunkape riders and the occasional skier. Powder lines will be ripped, Thin Lizzy and Dio will be blasted to the heavens, Red Bulls will be gulped and the judging will remain suspect as always at this fine anti-contest that is, and always will be, simply “a celebration of NW snowboard pride.”

Cold Oly’s being saved for all who make it possible: Lib Technologies, Cobra Dogs, Red Bull, Snowboy Productions, Peter Line, Joey McGuire, Jamie Lynn, Jesse Burtner and Shanna Duncan’s amazing artwork.

Mt Baker Wednesday Feb 13th, 2008 Photos & Story

Mt Baker Wednesday Feb 13th, 2008 Photos

Marcus (Markass) Schmick in the Heather Meadows lodge.

Connie busting some slashes under Mt Shuksan's sunlit glow.

There were about 5 inches of fresh, with more in the backcountry. The day was great because it was sunny and there weren't many people there after the Banked Slalom weekend.

There was quite a bit of people in this line-up to get out to the backcountry above chair 8. I hiked out on hemi's for a run and the powder was epic. There was a few hints of choppiness and some ice underneath in places, but overall the pow was fresh and dry.

Sammy Giffin was chillin by the lodge after a run on the arm.

Burton Snowboards buys Alien Workshop

DNA Distribution, which includes skateboarding brands Alien Workshop, Habitat and Reflex, today announced that the company has been acquired by Burton.

The two companies began discussions over a year ago and found that they share a common approach in the way that they contribute to boardsports culture, including a commitment to creating long-lasting relationships with their teams of international athletes. In addition, both are committed to advancing and innovating hardgoods technologies, as well as the artistry and creativity associated with these sports; supporting a solid team of amateur riders; and providing best customer service practices.

DNA Distribution will continue to operate in Dayton, Ohio and CEO and Co-Founder Chris Carter will continue to oversee the DNA brands, which include Alien Workshop, Habitat and Reflex Bearings.

"We are very excited to bring the DNA family of brands to Burton—a company that we truly respect," says Chris Carter, Chief Executive Officer for DNA Distribution. "Burton clearly leads their market in terms of team, innovation, marketing and values. Joe, Mike and I look forward to leveraging Burton's strengths to reach the full potential for the DNA brands: Alien Workshop, Habitat and Reflex."

"Through surfing and snowboarding we have learned that hardgoods are the foundation of all boardsports, and with the addition of DNA to our family, we are on our way to delivering skaters what they want and expect," says Jake Burton, Founder and Chairman of Burton. "As with Al Merrick and the crew at Channel Islands, the relationship with Chris, Mike and Joe at DNA has been a natural fit right from the start. Everyone around here is committed to growing Burton into a true boardsports company, so I am confident that we can provide a home where DNA and their team of skaters can build upon what they have already excelled at in the skate industry."

"We couldn't have found a better company to work with than DNA," says Laurent Potdevin, Burton's Chief Executive Officer. "Burton and all of its brands are authentically committed to snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding without distractions from other sports, products or categories. This acquisition completes a strategy that we have been very focused on for quite some time and marks a new milestone in the evolution of Burton and its family of brands."

Ken Block DC Mountain Lab 1.5 Snowpark NZ Snowboard Jump with a Car

Soundtrack for DC Mountain Lab 1.5

Ken Block owner of DC Shoes decided to hit a snowboard jump with his car for the movie DC Mountain Lab 1.5 in Snowpark, NZ. Hitting a Snowboard Jump with a Car is absolutely insane, not to mention having snowboarders jump alongside of it. Ken even pulls slashes underneath the kicker.

Forum Snowboards is proud to announce Droppin’ F Bombs – a themed event type thing where custom bomb jibs will be dropped at snowboarding parks across North America. Needless to say, it is going to be explosive – so, zero in on the attack plan for one-day only, custom park set-ups full of all things bombastic: a bomb drop, mogul minefield, three ‘F’ bomb jibs, and an arsenal of ‘F’ bomb themed giveaways.

A style contest will pop-off around noon where the overall style winner receives a Forum Destroyer Board (or a Forum binding or boot).

If competing isn’t your thing, at least join-in for a gut bomb burrito or a bomb dropped beverage.

If you can’t make it out for the day’s events, you’ll be happy to know the remnants will occupy a space in the park for the rest of the season.

Mt Baker Banked Slalom 08 Results & Photos

It was a stormy day at Mt Baker on Feb 8th, 2008 for the first day of the Legendary Banked Slalom. Mt Baker has been getting hit with tremendous amounts of snowfall recently and its was all powder for this day of the contest. The course was soft and fast, with wind gusts spraying fresh snowfall every direction imaginable. Competitors fought the itch to go do some powder turns and faithfully awaited their turn in the snow tent eating smoked salmon or sat outside awaiting the moment of no return.

HELLO BANKED SLALOM RACERS!
Friday, Feb. 8 - 6:00pm

Firstly, we would like to thank you for your patience today – all this snow is certainly a GREAT thing for riding pow, but it has certainly made for some race challenges!

1. The Washington State Department of Transportation will be CLOSING THE MT. BAKER HIGHWAY Saturday at approx mm 37 (just east of Glacier) due to forecasted significant avalanche danger. The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center has predicted that the rain event Saturday on top of the tremendous snowfall we have had this week could produce one of the most significant avalanche dangers the Pacific Northwest has seen in 20 years. (wow)

2. THE RACE IS CANCELLED FOR SATURDAY and the ski area will be CLOSED. In light of that, WE QUALIFIED 50% OF FRIDAY’S RACERS as the finalists for Sunday.

3. Anyone who DID NOT QUALIFY will receive a GUARANTEED ENTRY into the 2009 (next year’s) Legendary Banked Slalom. (we hope that helps! )

4. ALL RACERS (and friends) are welcome at the Salmon BBQ on SUNDAY. We will hold the BBQ in front of the White Salmon Lodge (complete with bonfire) prior to the Awards Ceremony.

5. SUNDAY’S FORECAST: 2,000 feet freezing level morning dropping to 1500 by the afternoon with 12 inches of new possible!

Thanks again to everyone for making the effort to come visit Baker. . . . . . we hope you got some good powder turns in today . . . .hunker down and stay out of the rain on Saturday and then GEAR UP for Sunday! We’ll be ready and waiting for you for the SUNDAY FINALS and SALMON BBQ!

was shot in original locations where abnormal features are
sessioned. Backcountry exploration reveals unique terrain
and obstacles that the crew shreds in creative and diverse
ways. The rider Line up includes CHAD OTTERSTROM, PETE
WURSTER, FFEJ KNAR, TRAILER TOM, MARK NENNINGER, NATE DOGGGG, JEFF
MEYER, RYAN KNAPTON, REED SILBERMAN, BRENT MEYER, JJ JOHNSON and PAT
MILBERY. This gritty and remarkable work twists in many contrasting ways that
are unexpected and puzzling at times......

All of your favorite PinPin characters unite in the
standout Film. Undoubtedly this is the crews most inspired
work, with creative jibs like a funbox slide out an old
cabins second story window, to abnormal and complex
features such as a ollie onto a skateboard that is ridden
down a wooden plank off the end of a cornice. A flurry of
marvelous energy unfolds in this rare, unexpected and
sometimes bizarre vision"

PinPin's new film entitled "PinPin Crazee 8's" and is now
available on DVD. Here is a description of the movie.

"PinPin Crazee 8's is the best PinPin film thus far. It
was shot in original locations where abnormal features are
